How to Plan a House Party
Treat your home like a small venue for one night. Decide how guests will move through the space before deciding how every room should look.
1. Set the guest number the house can actually support
Think about usable standing/seating space, toilet access, entrance congestion and where people will eat and drink. Bigger is not automatically better.
2. Protect the house before decorating it
Move fragile or private items, clear surfaces needed for serving, decide where coats/bags go and make obvious hazards less likely.
3. Plan food and drinks around storage
Fridge/freezer space and kitchen worktops can limit what you can serve. Use quantities your storage and serving setup can actually handle.
4. Create obvious zones
An entrance/coat area, drinks point, food area and somewhere to sit can reduce crowding. Avoid putting the main drinks station in the narrowest doorway or kitchen bottleneck.
5. Think about sound and neighbours
Speaker placement, bass, open doors/windows and late outdoor conversation can matter more than the playlist itself. Be realistic about the property and surroundings.
6. Bathrooms and rubbish
Stock toilet roll/soap, provide a visible bin/recycling system and plan where used bottles/plates go during the party.
7. Finish with cleanup logistics
Keep bin bags, food containers and cleaning basics available before guests arrive. A small reset during the party can stop rubbish and glassware piling up.
