How to Plan a Garden Party
A garden party is only easy when the weather co-operates. Build the plan around shade/shelter, food service, lighting, toilets and a backup rather than assuming the forecast will hold.
1. Decide what happens if it rains
Do not settle for “we'll go inside” unless the indoor space genuinely holds the guest list. Decide whether the party moves, shrinks, uses a marquee/cover, or changes format.
2. Plan shade and comfort too
Sun and heat can be as disruptive as rain. Provide access to shade, drinking water and seating appropriate to the guest group.
3. Keep food service practical
Minimise long journeys between kitchen and garden, protect food from weather/insects, and follow appropriate food-safety guidance for chilled/perishable items.
4. Drinks and ice

5. Lighting
If the event continues after dusk, light paths, steps and serving areas—not just decorative features.
6. Noise and neighbours
Outdoor sound carries. Decide when music comes down or moves indoors and keep local/venue restrictions in mind.
